1. What
training will the FBI pay for under the GETA program?
In general,
the FBI will pay for any class that directly relates to your job,
or any job-related course that your supervisor thinks you need,
unless the same training is available through an FBI source, for
example, at the Academy or on NETg.
2. How do I put in a request
for training?
Complete an SF-182
and get it approved by the appropriate people in your office (usually
your direct supervisor and one higher-level official). If you work
for an FBIHQ division, submit the form directly to the GETA office.
If you work in a field office, give the form to your training technician,
who will enter the information into the Bureau Personnel Management
System (BPMS) Training Sub-System. A GETA specialist will approve
the request and return it to you
3. Do I have to obtain
a certain grade in a class to have the Bureau pay for it?
No, however, your supervisor
should be ensuring that learning is taking place and that the training
is improving your performance.
4. What if I leave the
Bureau after completing a training class?
GETA guidelines require that
you stay with the Bureau a period of time equal to three times the
length of the training. For example, if you take a 40-hour training
class, you will need to work 120 hours more, which equals 15 days,
or about 2 weeks. If you leave the Bureau before that time, you
will have to reimburse the FBI.
5. How
long does it take to process a GETA request?
You should submit your
request for training approximately 1 month in advance in order to
allow for enough time to get it processed and approved. Remember,
the GETA office processes requests for all FBI employees.
