About the Academy Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
National Academy Frequently Asked Questions
1. How would a Special Agent pursue becoming a National Academy Counselor?

A Special Agent interested in becoming a National Academy counselor should contact the NA Admissions Office at the academy and speak with SSA Frank Gaughen, 703-632-3150.

2. Can Supervisory Special Agents be considered for a counselor at the National Academy?

Any selection for a counselor position must be approved by the SAC or ASAC of that office. There are no restrictions at the FBI National Academy that would restrict a SSA from participating.

3. Does the National Academy Program accept police officers below the rank of Lieutenant?

The National Academy does make exceptions to the rule of allowing only Lieutenants and above eligible for attendance. Departments with a rank structure that recognizes Sergeants as being in a policy making role may be considered. Sergeants who are in the process of a promotion may be considered as well. Any nomination of a candidate who is below the rank of Lieutenant must have a justification letter provided by the Training Coordinator explaining the circumstances of the nomination.

4. Has the National Academy Curriculum been changed or updated?

The National Academy Curriculum is continuously reviewed by each academic unit and all new courses must be approved through the FBI Academy's Curriculum Committee.

5. Can a student take more than one course in a particular discipline?

Currently, all students are required to take one course in each of the five disciplines taught at the National Academy. These include legal, law enforcement communication, leadership and management science, behavioral science, and forensic science. All students must also take a course in physical fitness while attending the National Academy.
